Design Style Guides for US Federal Government Web Sites

Design Style Guides are documents that contain instructions or guidelines to be followed when working on a project. They can range from simply outlining the fonts and colors to be used, through to cataloguing every aspect of a project including identities, images, layouts, and many other graphic elements. The benefit of using a design style guide is that they create consistency throughout a project and provide a clear set of instructions to follow.

The Draft U.S. Web Design Standards to provide open-source UI components and visual styles to create beautiful, consistent experiences across federal government websites.

18F, the office inside of US Government GSA Technology Transformation Service, has developed the Daft U.S. Web Design Standards to provide open-source UI components and visual styles to create beautiful, consistent experiences across federal government websites. While many different agencies maintain their own style guide, the Standards offer a common visual style that can be flexibly applied to a range of government digital platforms.

Draft U.S. Web Design Standards - UI components

YBYI Design recently applied this Standards in developing UI designs for the DoD Legacy Management System website. We were able to achieve developing a clean, modern layouts that meet high standards of visual accessibility by following the specs of UI components such as typography and colors from the guideline. We found the guideline is very clear to follow and helpful for designers and developers to create an unified identity of federal agencies’ digital presence while having flexibilities to add its own styles.
